Outpost Firewall Pro AFW.sys error at install

Post by irma »

Hi,

I'm using the 3.1.0 release of VB (VirtualBox) and SL (Snow Leopard) 10.6.2 latest software updates (patches) released to this day, and the hardware is a MacBook Late 2006 (GMA950) with 2GB of RAM, WinXP SP3 genuine licence with latest patches / windows updates at the date of this post.

after installing Outpost Firewall Pro, I get an error message: failed to load AFW.sys driver
http://www.turboimagehost.com/p/2487263 ... e.png.html

I've contacted them and they've told me outpost is designed to run with VMWare only :)

So do you know why outpost fail to install correctly and is there a way to bypass that?

Thanks.

ps: I've fully removed outpost including using tools to clean its registry entries and I've tried to reinstall it several times with the same result.

Don't know, but I do know that Free AVG works well in a VM and does not seem to require the CPU hit that some I have tried do.

Thanks for your reply but the point is: I would like to get outpost running.

Outpost is a firewall, an advanced one including antispyware, automatic rules creation according to rules defined and validated by the security experts of Agnitum themselves.

AFAIK, AVG is an antivirus, not a firewall and thus don't provide the functionnality I'm looking for. By the way, I use an Antivirus too and it works good with VB.

What I would like to know and get a fix to is why Outpost don't install correctly under VB.
Agnitum has refused to give me the technical reason which according to the fact it's a security company is understandable.

They have told me, outpost is coded to run correctly under VMWare, but well I don't want to switch to.
So I would prefer to get VB able to run correctly outpost (and not any other alternative: I've paid for outpost and I know it's a very accurate and efficient firewall).

Thanks for your understanding and for your answer.

For those interested in, I've solved the outpost issue this way:

0/ turn network mode of VB to NAT

1/ boot in safe mode without network by pushing F5 at boot time.

2/ desinstall outpost

3/ reboot in safe mode without networking

4/ install outpost. It'll take from 5 to 10 mins, it's very long and slow but will succeed

5/ reboot in normal mode

That's all: AFW.SYS will be installed and outpost runs like a charm.

the only thing i may advice is changing your firewall
try this for example - http://www.protemac.com/netmine/ - used it for 2 years never got problems
