Convert Fusion hard disk

I have a virtual hard disk from a VMWare Fusion (version 3) virtual machine that I am trying to use in a new VM set up in VirtualBox. I am running version 3.0.12 r54655 of Virtualbox on a MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM. After configuring the new VM in VB, and selecting the vmdk file as the hard drive, the machine boots and then just hangs at a blank screen for an extended period (30 minutes) after which I just shut it down. I was under the impression that VB could use a vmdk file as the hard drive. Is that correct? If so, any thoughts as to what may be occurring in my case?

Thanks in advance.

If this is a Windows guest, it's most likely Windows issue and not a VB issue. Windows doesn't like big hardware changes virtual or not. This does work I know because I took a Parallels OS/2 VM converted it to a VMWare VM and imported into VB.

There are several things that must be done (AFAIK) before you can use the VMDK file from fusion.
(1) Their guest additions need to be removed (they will conflict with the VBox guest additions)
(2) I believe you need to run a converter from VMware on it to make it ready to import to another type virtualizer.

Others may have more or better suggestions but I would start there.

Sorry my post was not real clear. Yes, the guest is a Windows XP SP2 vmdk.

Thanks. I did uninstall the VMWare additions prior to copying the virtual disk.

Do you have any additional information on what type of converter needs to be run?

taxman,

Sorry, I am out of suggestions myself. I do not use VMware and can only tell you of what I have read.
I will bow out of this discussion and let someone that does use it continue.

One last parting tip: Use <your keywords> site:forums.virtualbox.org in your favorite search engine and it will bring up everything that matches you query here.

The .vmdk file (base, ignoring any spit files) needs to be defined to VB's Virtual Media Manager.
I recommend copying, or moving, the .vmdk file and any splits to the VB folder for Hard Disks.

The Fusion Tools package can only be removed while running under Fusion, just as the Guest
Additions package can only be removed while running under VB.

When creating a new VM, "Use existing hard disk" should be selected and choose the .vmdk file.
