virtual box cpu usage

Post by njasmine »

I installed windows xp on my virtual box and it started off fast but now it is very slow. I was wondering if my system was small to run this program.

Dell mini 10v
amd 1.60 processor
1g of ram
160 hard drive

thank you

What about it is slow? You say: 'cpu usage', is the host CPU usage high. Please provide more details, such as what OS is running on your host, what does Task Manager (other process monitor) say?
Your system looks large enough to run VirtualBox to me.

CPU 1 and 2 are high around 97% the Ram is about 500, but I still don't know why it's running so slow

Other people (including me) report high CPU as you do.

In my case it happens if I use the 'ACPI Multiprocessor PC' HAL.
So I use the 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC' HAL instead (limits me to one CPU) and it's OK.
Search this site for 'HALu' to find a utility that allows you to change the HAL on your XP guest.

@njasmine,
What kernel are you using on the Host?
Run uname -r in terminal and post here when you find time.
Also if you post the latest log file and an attachment that will helps as well.

Here is a similar issue.
http://forum.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.p ... 4d9778411d

Actually I don't see above issue in 3.1.0 but the host CPU usage can easily reach 100% for both cores on dual core machine.
I remember using RT kernel in host will improve it.

In Linux guest I never see it with linux or windows host.
