Intel Graphics with working OpenGL on Ubuntu Karmic Guest

Hi All,
Is it possible to get a Ubuntu install with working compiz when the graphics hardware is an intel 4500MHD? On my desktop I have an nvidia card and I have installed Ubuntu Karmic as a guest (Windows 7 64-bit = Host) and compiz works fine. When installing Ubuntu karmic as a guest machine on my laptop that uses an Intel 4500MHD, I get a white screen and the VM crashes. This is only if I try to enable desktop effects.
I have VB 3.1.0 installed and the VM is a fresh install. Guest additions are installed. Host OS is Windows 7 64-bit.
I would really like to get this working if possible. Is it because of the Intel card? Guest OpenGL doesn't work with an onboard chipset? Anyone else have working compiz with an Intel graphics chip on an Ubuntu guest?
Thanks in advance.

Which version of VBox are you using?

What you are describing is exactly what would happen on a non-supported graphics adapter. I know there were issues with the Intel Graphics adapter and they have fixed some. You can also try to update the HOST drivers and see if this will help. If not them I am afraid it will be more than we can handle here. You can file a ticket on bugtracker, but I do not know how much good that will do at this point.

OK, thank you very much. I'll try updating the drivers and see what happens. If good things happen, I will report my results here. Thanks again.

Updated drivers with latest drivers on Intel's website. Still same thing. When I enable desktop effects I get the windows error message "VBox GUI has stopped working." Then I have options to send error to MS or quit Vbox GUI. I close it and the VM window goes away although VBox dashboard is still open.
Oh well, I'll keep looking around and if I find anything I'll post it here.

I have the same exact problem. VirtualBox 3.1.2 on Windows 7 x64 host with an Intel 4 series video - a Dell E6500 laptop.
My video driver is dated 10/30/2009, version 8.15.10.1986.
I have enabled 3d Acceleration and gave the video 128MB RAM. After installing the guest additions, the GUI will at some point during the boot process wash out to a white color, then throw the GUI stopped working error.
I have also tried setting the guest video memory to 12, 24, 32, 64 to see if it helps.
Same guest on my desktop with NVidia 8800GT is smooth, fast, and desktop composition works great.
Anyone solve this problem yet, or is this a video driver / bug problem?

Same thing for me.
Acer laptop with Intel's 4500 MHD.
Crash upon attempting to use 3D, counts for other distros aswell.

I get the same crash when running any variant of Windows in a Linux host - 3d works on the host just fine (I can spin a Compiz cube with Windows on one side and Ubuntu on the other three) but any attempt to use 2d or 3d accelerated graphics in the guest will cause it to abort instantly.
Dell Latitude E5500
Intel GMA 4500MHD

FWIW, I reported this:
http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/5915 about three months ago to the Virtualbox public bug tracker...

I have a similar problem:
Acer 1810T - intel 4500MHD
Windows 7 64 bit host
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64-bit guest with most recent guest-additions
Ubuntu installed OK with the "normal" desktop effects. Seems to work.. however, when trying to change effects to "none", I receive the Windows 7 error message that: "Virtualbox GUI has stopped working" and is killed.
I also get the error whenever I try to shut down the virtual machine.
If I disable 3d acceleration in Virtualbox, the desktop effects are turned off, and I can shutdown normally.

Folks, I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Intel and all my problems related to this issue have resolved. I have full/good Compiz and GL acceleration on my Intel 4 series laptop (Win7, x64, Dell e6500) for Linux guests in Virtualbox. Have at it.
