Is "host-only" host IP address reliable?

This is for discussing general topics about how to use VirtualBox.

Is "host-only" host IP address reliable?

Post by mpack »

The IP address of the host for "host-only" networking has always been 192.168.56.1, at least for me. During the beta testing of 3.1.0 I noticed that this had changed to 192.168.56.101, thus breaking all my network shared folder links (which all used static IP addresses for fast lookup). This happened despite my never having changed anything in the VBox preferences or any VM. However, I accepted this as the new state of affairs and dutifully changed the network shares in all my VMs (there's a couple of shares in each).

Now I just discovered that in the release version of 3.1.0 the address has gone back to 192.168.56.1, again breaking all my network shares, and again without my having changed anything in preferences.

What gives? Was this an unacknowledged bug fix, or is the (host-only) host IP address supposed to be variable?

I don't have the exact answer for you but the address has been variable for as long as I remember. You can edit the address in the preference. Maybe it was a mistake in the beta (typo) and fixed in the release. Either way if this happens I would reset it in the preferences myself and not need to do this for every guest you have.

Maybe it is best to override the default settings with the settings of your choice? I think there is a global configuration UI which allows you to modify the address. I cannot give you all the details, since I'm using the German UI.

Best regards, Uli

There is - it's in the "Preferences" dialog I already mentioned, and as I mentioned I have never changed this value in that dialog.

Perry, when I asked whether it was "variable" I really meant "is there a legit reason why it may vary from what I configured"? Obviously if I do change the preference then the IP should change.
