Hi - I installed Virtualbox on my Linux box and am using XP as a guest so I can use my iPod finally. I created a shared folder in the virtualbox thing's settings but it doesn't show up if I browse for a folder in iTunes (in My Network Places -> Entire Network -> MIcrosoft Windows Network )

and I tried:

net use x: \\vboxsvr\sharename

My shared folder is in my home directory /home/me/Music
so I typed > net use c: \\vboxsvr\Music
but get errors

how can I make VBox + iTunes see it?

thanks. please help so I don't have to buy a Windows computer

Read the manual. You can't map to an existing drive (C:\ in this case), but use something like X:. VBox shares aren't in Microsoft networking, it's a separate network. Hard to miss, unless you're really blind.

Thanks for telling me to read the manual that is very helpful. I did what the manual told me to do which is net use x: \\vboxsvr\sharename

and of course I tried
> net use x: \\vboxsvr\Music
and
> net use x: \\vboxsvr\shared

and I get a system error: Network path was not found.

I am not a good hacker so I don't know how to get around this stuff. Please help.

Process to share a folder for Windows Guest.

What ever it is you are mapping in the Guest settings it must have a name that is short, no caps, and no characters. There can be no spaces in the name either.
Then follow this step by step to create the share and map it in the Windows guest.
  • Close the guest (shutdown)
  • Open the VirtualBox program and click once on the guest.
  • Click settings and then click on shared folders.
  • Click the folder with the green + to add a new share
  • Click the down arrow on the folder path then click the Folder that says other.
  • This brings up a browse window. Browse to the folder that you want to share and click OK.
  • This will put the full path in your folder path line
  • Click on the box just below that and type shared then press enter.
At this point you have created the shared folder.
  • Now open (start) the guest.
  • Click the program start button and then open a command window or click in the run box and type cmd and press enter.
  • Put this in the command window: net use x: \\vboxsvr\shared -p and press enter
  • After this the share will show in the file manager as a mapped drive.
All of this is assuming that you have the guest additions installed. If you don't then it will not work for you until you do install the guest additions.

You love him, but call me names through PM. Sorry, but if you even bothered with the rules we have here, none of this would have been needed. It's not just in the manual (some of it though), but everything can be found here on the forums.

You called me dumb and blind. I AM A REGULAR WINDOWS USER TRYING TO COME TO YOUR SIDE so maybe Windows left me dumb but if you call us names we will shy away from this.

Ok guys. This is not going to solve anything. You have your fix and now it is time to move on and enjoy the product.
Before this becomes a flame war and since the problem is now fixed.
I will lock this topic to prevent anyone from saying something that I am sure they will regret later.
