Hello,
I am running WinXP guest on Kubuntu Koala host
and i created a dynamic .vdi set to max 10gb.
Now, WinXP reports, that i have 38mb left on my hdd,
but there is just the os and Adobe Flash on it.
Even the .vdi file is 3.7gb big.
Tried, all cleaning and other stuff.

What could be the problem?

Sounds like you need to convert the XP HDD to NTFS.

Even so, are you 100% sure that the drive isn't full? Windows almost never shows the wrong disk space, especially if you pick the properties of the hard drive and check it. Picking all folders on the drive itself won't work, because there are hidden files and folders, like the page file, which can be quite big.

Really, i have installed WinXP, then Adobe Flash CS4, then Chrome. Nothing else. I wonder what those 'big blocks' are.

Dont think about this long time.

FAT is crappy by Default.

Make a new Installation and choose NTFS as Filesystem.

No idea. What is the file system on the Host? Default Linux file system (ext3/4) or FAT32 too? If it's the latter, that could be the reason, as FAT32 allows files up to 4 GB, not bigger. Strange behaviour though if it's FAT32 on the Host, as it would usually allow you to fill it up to 4 GB after which VB will pause the VM stating the Host hard drive is full, not the Guest stating it's own drive is full. Probably another bug from FAT32 on XP.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I have almost the same problem, although I do have NTFS on the guest, so that does not seem to be the problem.

The host is Vista, with more than 16 GB free space (NTFS). The vdi is 16GB dynamically expanding. The size of the vdi file is 14,24 GB, so the free space reported in the guest (1,56 GB) is almost equal to the difference between the vdi virtual size and the real file size (16 - 14,24 = 1,76 GB).

I also noticed that the guest file system is heavily fragmented, I'm gonna try defragmenting it, but I doubt it'll help.

First try doing a chkdsk by running

chkdsk /f c:

from a cmd window it will complain that the disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule a check.
Answer yes to scheduled check.
Reboot and wait....
Check how it looks. If you still miss space try turning off system restore like this:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK

I ran checkdisk, which did find some errors, but fixing them didn't solve the problem.
I already had system restore turned of, the "System Volume Information" folder only contains two files (20 kB).

I solved it by attaching the vdi to a linux vm and shrink and then expand it with gparted.

Hi,

Since some weeks I get the same error message ("devata_DISKFULL"). My host system is Debian Lenny, my guest system is Windows XP SP3 with all current Microsoft updates installed.

This error occurs some minutes after my guest system is up and running, or I can provoke it faster when trying to defragment the c drive.

All disks (except the disk with the virtualbox additions) have enough free space. The c drive has about 1,5 GB free space. The d drive about 29 GB.

All disks are using NTFS, except for the Virtualbox Additions disk that uses CDFS.

I deactivated the windows restore points functionality about one year ago.

The display of the calculation of the capacity of the c drive is correct, so shrinking and expanding the VM via gparted seems not to make sense.

I am using VB in version 4.0.4 r70112

I think I have identified the cause of the error message:

The Linux partition where the VM file for drive c is located is full:

(For those who do not understand German: this output says that 0 KB are available on the partition that holds the *.vdi file containing the c drive.)

The Virtualbox settings for drive c say:

Virtual size: 10.00 GB
Real size: 8.55 GB

Windows XP itself says that drive c has a size of 9.99 GB, and that 1.82 GB of these 9.99 GB are free.

Is my assumption correct that I get the error message "devata_diskfull" because there is no more space avaiable on the partition that holds the *.vdi file?
