XP Image in VirtualBox

Post by drmsucks »

I'm new to VirtualBox and have a question. I want to install VirtualBox under Win 7 and have XP as the guest OS.

I have a fully functioning XP installation now with programs, data, etc. Is it possible to clone (image) my current XP installation and install it into VirtualBox?

Thanks!

Possible, yes. But you will run in a few issues. First is the activation of your system. Unless it's a branded machine (HP, Dell, etc.) and you can extract the proper DMI information (see the sticky in Windows Guests) and put it in the VM config.
Another thing you will face is drivers. It's quite possible it won't even boot and BSOD on you in your face. Again, see the sticky in Windows Guests.
