Installing VB on Mandriva 2008

Post by Jaraqui »

Hi guys,

I have Mandriva 2008 and downloaded VirtualBox-3.0.10_54097_mdv2008.0-1.i586.rpm
available in the download www.virtualbox.org section.

After this, I clicked twice over this file and an installation automatically happend.

But, at the end, I didn't find any shortcut or directory related to VB.

My questions:
a) Did I do right?
b) If "yes", is there any other commands that I need to perform? Yet: is there
any "n-step quick & easy installation guide"?
c) I "no", what I need to undo and what I need to do?

Regards

You at least need to add yourself to the vboxusers group before VB will work properly for your user. See the VirtualBox FAQ for how to do that. You need it for proper USB functions and it might even give problems booting a VM if you're not a member.

Other than that, did you log out and back in again? Sometimes the shortcut isn't seen until that is done. Add yourself to the group first, as you need to log out and back in anyway to get the permissions set.

Cirurgically correct. Thank you. The shortcut is there!

But...
something is happening:
-I click on "emulators-->Virtual Box", the jumping box appeared (program starting
execution), but nothing is opened to me. The jumping box disappears and everything
returns to normal (no Virtual Box screen is presented);

-before running, I included my username logging me as root and
putting the following command:
usermod -G vboxusers -a <myusername>

-I executed the .rpm not looged as root;

Is there any other step?

Open a terminal and run VirtualBox (case sensitive). If there is any error, it should show in the terminal.

That's major suckage. Seen that error before. Please try a full system update, especially for the Qt packages. If that doesn't work, I hope you can get some useful information through Google, filtered on this forum (see signature).
