Win 7 - Ubuntu 9.10 fonts are missing

Greetings all, I load up Ubuntu 9.10 and all of the fonts show up as boxes rather than the actual letters. Not sure why it thinks the fonts are missing? Any ideas? I've attached a screenshot for reference.
This is under Win 7 using VirtualBox 3.0.12.
Thanks!
Dave

I'm sorry, but it seems to be an Ubuntu problem, not specific to VB. Have you asked the Ubuntu Forums yet? What language did you select/are you trying to display? Maybe it's a bug in the live environment.

It's just english. The boot screens show the letters fine, it's not until I enter the OS that this problem shows up. BTW,this is Win7 64-bit with Ubuntu 64-bit if that makes any difference. I'll try to see if Ubuntu works by booting off the Cd without a virtual machine and see if the same problem exists.

If you're using the ISO in the VM (advised), then check the hash of the file. You can find the pre-calculated hash in the same location as you found the ISO.
Like:
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/release/ in case of plain Ubuntu.

Ok, I figured out the problem. The 64-bit version causes this problem. I tried the i386 install and the fonts show up fine. Cheers!

No, you have not find the problem. In the guest there were font packages failing.
