Hello,
I'm using debian sid as host and windows xp pro sp3 in vbox 3.0.12
I've installed vbox for using "iTunes" (for iPhone control) and "TomTom home" for updating tomtom
Actually iTunes recognize iPhone correctly when I connect him but with tomtom nothing do to: it doesn't recognize it, or better, when I plug the usb my tomtom device ask me "Do you want to connect to 'Computer'" ?
I touch the display saying "Yes" and tomtom change the screen like it was connected to tomtom home, but tomtom home say there isn't device connect
I've also tried "Usb filter" with this value:
Code: Select all
UUID: deee8806-af6f-4947-85ea-1ee1c50d20f9
VendorId: 0x1390 (1390)
ProductId: 0x0001 (0001)
Revision: 1.0 (0100)
Manufacturer: TomTom
Product: GO 930
SerialNumber: J61138H002E8
Address: sysfs:/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-4//device:/dev/bus/usb/001/006
Current State: Busy
But noting change.
could someone please help me ?
TThanks!

When you have no filter set at all, can you select the device from the USB menu (Devices > USB)?

Hi Sasquatch,
as you can see in my screenshoot I can't select the device before
(the 'TomTom' device is a filter created)
Thanks.

Keyboard, mouse, 3x BT dongle! What are all these devices doing there? You don't need a filter for every device you want to use. Filters are for when you want a device to be automatically grabbed. When no filter is set, you can manually pass the device to the Guest. With an empty filter, all devices that are plugged in after the VM is started should be grabbed automatically.
But, as I suggested before, try it with no filter and connect tomtom manually through the Devices > USB menu.

You did manually select it? Can you select it before you tell tomtom to connect to the computer?

Now, with tomtom unplugged, I can't see nothing.
If I plug tomtom device in I see the device under Devices -> USB, so I select and run vbox
When vbox is runnig, I lunch tomtom home application and it tell me no such device connected...

Probabily it's tomtom related problem only.
When I plugin tomtom the first time, the device it tells me "do you want to connect to computer?" I answer "YES" and the it change the screen like when it connect to tomtom home.
At this point I see also the "TomTom device 930" under USB -> device in vbox. I select it
I start the vbox, and lunch "tomtom home" and it can't recognize the device, because it's like the device is already connect.
In other word, first time you connect tomtom to computer for recognize it, the device change his mode in tom tom home program and when you run vbox the device is already in tom tom home program and you can't change it
The target is to runnig vbox with the tomtom device *not* in tom tom home program mode and when vbox is running, plugin the device for recognize it in windows.
I am not absolutely sure about this thing, it's just a guess

Ok I have hooked up my Garmin to Windows XPpro x64 running on Ubuntu 9.04 host.
Ubuntu 9.04 actually sees my unit and is fully functional and VirtualBox program does see it as an unknown device.
Here is what I did to get it going in the guest.
I plugged it in before I started the guest.
I did not put any filters in the USB settings. Just make sure that the check marks are in the enable USB controller and the Enable USB2 Leave the filters with nothing in it.
Start the guest and wait for it to settle down.
At the top click devices and the go to USB and look for the one that says 930 (more than likely unknown)
If there are a lot and you can not determine which one it is you can unplug the tomtom and see which one disappears.
Then close the section and click it again to see the right one.
Click it to select and wait for it to load the drivers. (This could take a minute or so) You should see that it is loading the drivers and tell you when they are installed.
A this point you should see the device as a large storage device in the file manager.
Install your software and you should be able to work on it from there.
I do not know for sure that this will work for you but I think the tomtom and the garmin would act the same. I do know that Ubuntu has the specific file to allow me to use my Garmin but in checking it does not have files for the TomTom.

Don't understand this point very well.
Now I can't try, I'm in office.

Here I'm.
1) plugin tomtom BEFORE running guest WITHOUT any filter listed
2) running guest
3) on top left I click on devices -> usb devices
4) I see all usb devices 'TomTom GO 930 [0100]' included
5) It isn't possibile choose any voice under devices -> usb devices (they are of grey light color)
Thanks again Perryg for your patience.

Solved!
The problem was on 5th point: I wasn't not able to choose the USB devices so I thinked it was a permission problem.
I've added my user <fab> to <vboxuser> group (in /etc/group)
The line looks like
And now, in guest, I can choose all usb devices.
Thanks to all!
p.s this is right for debian sid

DOH! Maybe it was a better idea to check the
VirtualBox FAQ before posting here
