Keyboard not registering the correct characters

Post by notnarb »

I am running windows 7 (RC1) and am virtualizing a Ubuntu image designed for developing for Maemo (Nokia? latest and greatest OS), but I am running into a big keyboard issue, characters like quotes (single and double), the carrot, the tilda, and that thing under the tilda dont work. When I press them once, they do nothing and cancel out the next keystroke, but pressing them twice gives the correct character in most instances ¨ ´ ` ~, but they dont produce the actual character (hence my programs not compiling unless I copy and paste all of my quotes :x ). Once I started writing this, I found out that pressing the single quote followed by a letter puts an accent over it.. weird á?é?ýúíó???????? Maybe a hint as to what kind of keyboard it is interpreting mine to be?

Obviously, either your host or your guest has the wrong keyboard type selected. Probably the latter, in which case it may be best to ask this question in the Linux guests forum.

Both of the keyboards I tested work fine in my host OS and present the same problem in my guest OS. I've gone through many different keyboard models in the guest OS and all present the same problem. I posted this here because I thought it was virtualbox causing the issues (maybe a fault of the release candidate of windows 7?), but I suppose I'll repost this in the linux guest OS forum

Problem is the layout inside the Guest. You probably selected US International (Dead Keys). That means that when you want to type ', " or ~, you press it once, then hit space. That allows you to get the character you need. It's the same behaviour as on Windows, so I find it odd that you're having such issues.

Turns out that was the case and it didn't fix until my computer crashed (forcing a restart), which then applied the changes I had been doing to the keyboard layout. Thanks
