Question about tickets/bug fixing

Post by Meskin »

First, I'm new here. I tried looking around for an answer before this post. I'm also new to open source software so please don't take this as a flame or troll. All of that because after reading a bunch of posts here it seems that sometimes a couple folks are a little short with new peoples questions. :) Hopefully this is the right place to ask.

OK, my question. I'm wanting to run Ubuntu in a VM with desktop effects enabled. I have the same problem that is documented in the ticket at http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4653 and the 2 threads that it refers to in this forum. I noticed that the ticket has been open for 4 months and that the category is set to major. I'm wondering if this is something that can be fixed and/or if it is being worked on? The ticket doesn't have a name assigned to it but I don't know if that is normal or not.

Thanks in advance for any information.

@Meskin,

Tell me about your problem. Exactly what is it the is not working for you?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 as a guest GAs installed and I have compiz working when I want it. Please post the hosts memory and the exact settings used for the guest and we can see what the problem may be.

Now to answer some of your other questions, if you look through the posts it is actively being worked. Last reply just a few days ago. The problem is that not everyone has this problem, as I stated I do not. This makes it difficult to run down because the DEVs may not be able to reproduce the problem.

Most of the people here are just fine. Sometime (as everyone does) they have a bad day is all.

Thanks for your reply!

The problem that I'm having is that the screen doesn't seem to finish updating when I do things like close a window or hover over a menu. The best I can do to describe it is that when I close a window it begins to fade out and then stops with about 4 or 5% opacity left. Its like there is a ghost of the window left after it is closed. As soon as I click somewhere (or sometimes if I wait a couple seconds) the screen finishes the redraw and removes the "ghost". Similar things happen when I mouse over a menu or things like that. Another example is clicking on a tab within a window doesn't always change the screen to the new tab until I click outside the window. This happens in the Appearance settings window for example. The screen shots in the ticket are very similar to what I'm seeing.

The system has 2GB of RAM.

I dug around and found the VBoxManage utility to get the information about the guest OS, hopefully that's the info you were looking for.

VirtualBox was installed for the first time on version 3.0.10 and it is a clean (default) install of Ubuntu 9.1. I followed the instructions to install the Guest Additions and at the end of that install (after it builds the kernel modules) it says that it finished successfully.

Sorry for the length of the post and if there is any other info I can supply to help troubleshoot this please let me know.

Thank you for your help!

First thing I would like for you to do is set the Vram to 32 meg and see what happens.
Post back and I will see what else needs to be done.

Perryg,

Changing the vram setting has no effect. While I appreciate your willingness to troubleshoot this, its pretty obvious that there is an issue that needs to be addressed in the code in order to make this work. I see that the 3.1 beta 2 addresses some of this and when it gets fixed there I'll ask for more help, if needed.

Thanks
