Host internet connection doesn't work (installed with HIN)

Post by helloworld123 »

Host is Windows XP SP3. After installing VirtualBox with the Host Interface Networking option enabled, the wireless internet connection on the host can no longer acquire an IP address. I've looked through the manual and searched google. Is there some sort of set of instructions one needs to perform to get outside connections working with the VirtualBox network interface?

I have attempted this with 3.0.10

It seems like this is a 3.0.10 issue. Works fine in 3.0.8

Perhaps you can explain this a little better. Version 3.X.X does not have Host Interface. This was replaced several versions back with Bridged.
Also are you truly using the OSE version of VirtualBox? Most Windows hosts use the PUEL version.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of the difference between OSE/PUEL when registering. I am using the PUEL version. Are not all the binaries (and thus the majority of installs) PUEL? Does it matter in terms of forum support? I didn't feel like compiling and am not using it an enterprise environment. (no need to answer this, rhetorical question)

I meant to say: "The wireless connection is connected but packets are not recieved".

What I meant by "with the Host Interface Networking option enabled", was that during installation, one of the installed components is called "VirtualBox Networking" and the description is "Sun VirtualBox network adapter driver for Host Interface Networking". I am guessing this is required for Guest OSs to have access to network connections.

Anyway, after the 3.0.8 install, my wireless network worked for a little while but abruptly lost the connection. After the 3.0.10 install, the connection was broken immediately. Restarting the connection or the computer did not help.

The wireless software successfully connects but Windows does not receive any packets or receive an IP from the router. The issue seems like a standard part of the configuration of VirtualBox. Is there a set of instructions that I need to perform in terms of bridging? Bridging is used to connect Guest network connections to the host network connection no and doesn't seem relevant to this issue?

After installation, I selected the Connection (in Network Connections) and one of the protocols ("items") that it uses is the VirtualBox network adapter. Disabling it does not fix the connection.

I have tried this on 2 computers with the same results.

Let me ask a few questions so I can fully understand what you are actually doing.

1) Do you see the wireless adapter in the Guest settings of the Virtual Machine?
2) Is this wireless adapter by chance a USB device?
3) If a USB device are you setting a filter for it in the USB settings of the guest?

Also if you would post the following:
Run this in a host terminal/command windows VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.
