Vbox -- 3.0.8
Host-OS -- windows 7 | rtm build 7600
Guest-OS -- grml-medium(debian)

somehow i managed to install grml in the vbox. had manually partition the virtual-harddisk at install prompt. Now grml is installed and working good, but in a resolution of 1024x786. tired to change it for full-screen (1440x900). And share a local folder in host and guest, or best if i can mount local drive say (:\D) in grml.

googling/binging -- have to installed something called guest additions

i start my VirtualBox, run grml, and on the VM windows click <device> then <guest addition> <host + D>. nothing comes up, no window, no message. totally lost, nothing on forum or net about this.

Thanks| Vivek Sharma

Click unmount CD/DVD first then click install guest additions.
This should mount the CD on the desktop if you are using a graphics display if not then you will need to mount it yourself via CLI.
This should help too Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config

You probably don't have autorun. See my howto for manual install instructions.

Hi,
I have tired all, tired re-installing to later 3.0.10. But its still not working.

host - windows-7 RTM build 7600
guest - grml-medium (a light debian distro, system admin & development oriented)

What is working --
my grml (debian-based-distro) is working fine, but in reduced resolution.

what is not working --
not able to share folders from win7-host. On clicking devices> shared folders, a dialog box opens, in the machine-folder sub-heading i have shared a folder, with sharename vbshared.
now in the guest-grml i type
> sudo mount.vboxsf vbshared /home/username/shared
mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device

From, and this forum, i think i dont have guest-additions installed. What i have done for that.
1. i have copied the iso from site.
2a. tried mounting it on a windows machine, using poweriso (a demon tool). and then by clicking DEVICE>MOUNT host cd/dvd rom
2b. tried mount from , by clicking DEVICE>MOUNT image cd/dvd rom. and selecting the downloaded guest-addition.iso

3. Click DEVICE> install guest addition.
nothing comes up, no message, no flash of screen, no dialogue box, no notification.
clicked again,
then
again... again. and tired.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\Autorun -- is set to one. So autorun is enabled.

Uninstalled VirtualBox, installed the latest version. This was lite-uninstall, as i did not deleted the registry enteries and myDisk.vdi or anyother setting the c:/programfiles/sun/* .

Some conflicting behaviour -
1. In c:/programfiles/sun/virtualbox/* i have an iso image called VBoxGuestAdditions.iso, I dont remember downloading it, however i did-downloaded a file VBoxGuestAdditions_3.0.8.iso, but in my E:/downloads. I have no clue how it got into c:/programfiles/sun/virtualbox/*.
2. and to try i deleted this in c:/programfiles/sun/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAddition.iso, i was flashed with an error c:/programfiles/sun/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAddition.iso not found.

1. I want to shared folder between my host and guest.
2. If, possible i would really really love to ssh to my guest-linux box.

thanks. its been a week i am stuck over this. I checked my OS-forums, installed the guest-addition from deb repository by
>aptitude install virtualbox-ose-guest-modules-2.6.28-grml

this installed, but still i cant share the folder.

You're not making much sense with all that. The only thing I understand is that you downloaded the ISO, that is actually shipped with the installer file, manually to a different location and tried to load that. You also installed the GA through the repo itself of the Guest, but some things don't work.

What I can't see is if you actually followed my install GA howto.

I Didnt know that the actual installer, has a copy of GA inside the main installer.
yes, your are right, i also, manually downloaded the GA.iso to a seperate location, which now i understand i dont need to, as there is one already in the Sun/Virtualbox - which came with the installer.

yes i have followed you guide at
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15679
but again, after mounting the iso, i clicked "install guest addition" in the device drop down. nothing showed on screen
Although, at the bottom of virtualbox, when i hover my mouse point over the CD-mounting icon, i see a messagebox displaying GA.iso mounted. But when i browse my guest-os, /media /mnt nothing is showing (i tired sudo mount -a)

i then un-mounted the iso, and mount some-other iso, ubuntu.iso from a stored iso file on my pc. same above mention behaviour. on hover at the icon i can ubuntu.iso is mount message, but "sudo mount -a" shows me nothing /media or /mnt.

any suggestions.

Have you actually mounted the CD in your guest?

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom

OMG!!!
what an crack i have been.
it mounted, now i have issues with distro it says
on running the
sudo sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
i get an error --

VirtualBox 3.0.10 Guest Additions installation
Please install the build and header files for your current Linux kernel.
The current kernel version is 2.6.31-grml
Problems were found which would prevent the Guest Additions from installing.
Please correct these problems and try again.

i have already installed build-essentials (debian based distro).

vks@vksTP /mnt/cdrom % sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

Package linux-headers-generic is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package linux-headers-generic has no installation candidate

and from my OS-mailing list i was told linus-headers-2.6.31-grml
is what i am suppose to install.

anyone any hints now. Thanks a lot

Try using this command and see, otherwise you will need to know the exact name of the header file to get it.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
