Shared Folder XP inside Ubuntu
I have the guest additions installed on my Ubuntu Karmic and the cursor reacts perfectly. On the other hand I had to created a Network Place named ubuntu to get to my folder "vbox share." This is a work around but is the problem solvable by some action on my part?

GA installed on your Host
? Why did you do that? The name says it all, GUEST additions, meant to be installed INSIDE the GUEST. Didn't you read the manual? It's all described there.

Re: Shared Folder XP inside Ubuntu
... I don't know who you are and having read my post over again I should have hoped that the first responder would have expressed a bit more insight than this. As I understand the matter it is impossible to install the GA on the host and as a fellow tech my first assumption would have been that the GA were installed in the only place possible, the guest account WinXP.

Re: Shared Folder XP inside Ubuntu
While your profile state that you have that as Host. The Guest you're running is Windows. The way you posted it here, and you will probably agree, is that it looks like you installed the GA on the Host.th1bill wrote:I have the guest additions installed on my Ubuntu Karmic and the cursor reacts perfectly.
If you follow the Forum Posting Guide and give us some more information to work with, that should be no problem.th1bill wrote:Please, could someone .. lend me a hand?

My first time so be gentle!
Host: Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 Workstation, 32-bit. Guest: Windows 7 evaluation copy. Virtualbox 3.0.12.
I'd like the same quality instructions as you posted for Ubuntu guest in Windows host and it would be great if the resulting instructions could be stickied as they are in the Linux Guest thread.
Thanks!

Re: Shared Folder XP inside Ubuntu
Installing the GA in Windows is too easy to even mention making a howto for it. You install them just like you would install Opera browser for example. Only if you want to have 3D (no Aero, not supported yet), you have to first boot to safe mode and install it from there. Safe mode can be accessed by hitting F8 right after the boot splash disappears.

Re: Shared Folder XP inside Ubuntu
I think he was asking for a howto mount the shared folder in the guest OS, not how to install GA in the guest OS. That's certainly how I ended up on this board.
Your existing tutorial for Linux inside Windows is excellent but I simply don't know what the windows equivalent of "mount" is.

@Ladadadada,
There really is no Windows equivalent to mount. Windows mounts the CD at boot time. You can change what is mounted by selecting it in the devices -> CD/DVD section.
What problem/s are you having so I can try to assist you?

Re: Shared Folder XP inside Ubuntu
What I'm trying to do is transfer a file from my host OS into the guest OS. I assumed that creating a shared folder would be the easiest way to do this (so please correct me if I was wrong about that) but I just can't seem to find where the shared folder IS in the guest OS.Perryg wrote:What problem/s are you having so I can try to assist you?
I have rebooted the guest and no new drives or folders were apparent.
I got the file into the guest by uploading it to a web server I control and then downloading it using a web browser in the guest, so this is not particularly urgent any more, but it would be nice to know the better method. Especially if I need to transfer large files in the future.

Re: Shared Folder XP inside Ubuntu
Assuming you have installed the guest additions:
Create a share in the guest settings of the VBox program then start the guest and then open a command window and type the following to mount the share in Windows.
Replace sharename with the name you gave the share in VirtualBox. It will now show up in your file manager.

Code: Select all
net use x: \\vboxsvr\sharename -p-
