Problems installing Guest Additions for Fedora 11 under XP

Post by Techbart »

Hi, I'm new to Virtual Box but must say I'm liking it a lot so far:). I have it installed in both Windows XP and Fedora 11, both working flawlessly. The only real issue is, when trying to install guest additions for Fedora 11 under XP, it complains that I need to install the kernel header and build files, which I'm pretty sure I have. I'll post what happens below:

[root@tester VBOXADDITIONS_3.0.10_54097]# sh VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 3.0.10 Guest Additions for Linux installation................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
VirtualBox 3.0.10 Guest Additions installation
Please install the build and header files for your current Linux kernel.
The current kernel version is 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i586
Problems were found which would prevent the Guest Additions from installing.
Please correct these problems and try again.
[root@tester VBOXADDITIONS_3.0.10_54097]# uname -r
2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i586
[root@tester VBOXADDITIONS_3.0.10_54097]# yum list installed |grep headers
kernel-headers.i586 2.6.30.9-96.fc11 installed
[root@tester VBOXADDITIONS_3.0.10_54097]# yum list installed |grep devel
glibc-devel.i586 2.10.1-5 installed
kernel-devel.i586 2.6.30.9-96.fc11 installed
mdadm.i586 3.0-0.devel3.7.fc11 installed
[root@tester VBOXADDITIONS_3.0.10_54097]#

As you can see, it's reporting the kernel-devel and kernel-headers to be installed when I query yum. I assume the devel files are what it's after when it asks for "build" files, or am I just missing something here? Cheers!

Here is your problem:
The current kernel version is 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i586
That's fine, but check this:
kernel-devel.i586 2.6.30.9-96.fc11 installed
They don't match. See my howto.

D'oh! Completely missed that:p. Cheers for pointing it out:). Um, would it be cheeky of me to ask for a link to the howto? And I assume I just need to pull out that particular build and force the correct version in? Thanks again.

It's a signature, but it doesn't have useless lines like most have. Pure power user stuff. Should be taken seriously. If only others....
