Call of Duty 4 fail

Post by vitamincpp »

I am trying to install Call of Duty 4 (patch 1.7, not original iw3sp.exe) on Windows XP SP3 guest.

The host is Ubuntu 9.10 karmic, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8500GT, VirtualBox 3.0.10 from the Debian repository. The game works through wine 1.1.31 on Ubuntu but with a low fps.

I install VirtualBox, restart in same mode, install guest additions (with Direct3D checkbox ON), restart in normal mode. In dxdiag it appears that DirectDraw and Direct3D are installed and working, I see the rotating cube in Direct3D test. In the DirectX tab, it says that 2 files are old, d3d8.dll and d3d9.dll. 3D acceleration is ON in preferences. I install the game, the patch, replace iw3sp.exe, trying to run it. It shows the game console and then an error appears:

"Error during initialization: Video card or driver doesn't support separate alpha blend, glow will be disabled."

What do I do? How to get this separate alpha blend?

I will be happy to provide any additional information needed, thanks.

Please check the new beta that was released today, it should have 3D fixes for CoD. Don't forget to update the GA too, else it won't make any difference.

Sasquatch, thank you for your reply!

New beta of VirtualBox? Where do I get it? Have found no clue about it on the main page :-\

I have removed VirtualBox completely with all the configurations, downloaded 3.1 beta, installed all the stuff again from scratch. The same problem remains :(

Well, there is no specific change for CoD for that alpha blend, only fixes for crashes. Why do you want alpha blend anyway? Only to make your HUD semi transparent? Big deal, not every D3D option is available.

I will be happy to run the game with all the graphic settings set to the lowest value! I just can't run the game because of this alpha blend. Error message appears and thats all, the game loading stops. Can I run it anyway, without the alpha blend? If yes, how do I do it?

The question to play the game without the alpha blend should be asked in a specialized forum for the game. Try this for example: http://www.google.com/search?client=ope ... 8&oe=utf-8

I've already searched for it. Seems that on Windows machines people get this error message because of very old graphics card. Probably there is no solution unless you upgrade your video card. My video card can run CoD4 on native Windows 100%. So, I think, there is nothing I can go. Just wait and hope that VirtualBox developers will fix it sometime :)

More the job for the Wine D3D team to fix, as that's used for DirectX in the VM.
