Virtual Media Manager - abnormal image lock

Post by nick7inc »

Hello.

The Virtual Media Manager works very bad. It often locks disk images, and no Remove, No Mount, No Release (Release do nothing) is avalable.

For Example, I create disk image, then I try to mount it. VB refuse to do it (nothing happens). But this image becomes locked. I kill this file, remove Spanshot, but the image is still locked. :(

This problem exist in VB 3.0.10 -3.0.08. It is very difficult to work when images become unmountable and locked at the same time. May be it is a good idea to remove locking of removable disk images (FDD and CD) at all from VB, because this feature makes more problems, than helps. And I wonder, why VB refuse to mount some images with no reason or error messages.

Strange. There was a similar bug about this before but that got fixed. Yours is a bit different. The one that I mean was that the file wasn't released when you click on release, but it did get released from the VM, the MM just didn't think it was. When you tried to reattach it, it didn't work. Only after VB was closed a little while, and every process was closed, it released the 'lock' on the file(s) and you could then start VB again to attach the ISO to the VM that needed it. Here is the ticket of the bug back then: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3202 and should not be in VB since 2.2.

It looks like... When I just restart VB GIU (with small delay), the lock still was there. But after long delay I am able to remove file from list. As I see, some system process closed after some delay, if there is no more VB windows opened.

P.S. I cann't make to work USB support in guest also, when I test USB with my flash drive. The USB is locked with similar way, if I try to reuse it, error message window appears. The host Windows XP installs VB driver for USB, but from Windows XP guest there is no reaction at all. The guest addins are installed on guest system.

The lock issue is because when you close the GUI and VMs, the VBoxSVC process is still running in the background to finish some last tasks (no idea what, but it does something). Only after that process stops will you be able to release the image. That was the bug that I linked to about.

Your USB problem has to do with Windows. Please check other topics in this forum, or open a new one. See the Forum Posting Guide, one question/issue, one topic.
