Help! Upgrade Broke my VM

Post by liminal »

I just tried to upgrade from 2.2.4 to 3.0.10 and now my VM won't start.

I am using a Windows XP host with an Ubutntu 8.04 guest.

I first uninstalled the old version of virtualbox, then installed the new version.

The old version (2.2.4) was installed in the default C:\Program Files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox
The new version (3.0.10) is installed to the new default C:\Program Files\Sun\VirtualBox

When I try to start the virtual machine it displays an error dialog saying:

"
Failed to start the virtual machine Ubuntu 8.04.1.

Medium 'C:\PROGRA~1\Sun\XVMVIR~1\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' is not accessible. Could not access the image file 'C:\PROGRA~1\Sun\XVMVIR~1\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).
"

I can post the expanded detail information if it will help.

Suggestions on how to get this running again?

Go to the guest settings and unmount the CD/DVD.
Close and restart VBox and you should be back in business.

Thanks for the advice. But... Since I doubted I would get a reply on a Saturday night, I reverted to my last nightly backup, so now I'm back to a working 2.2.4. Is there a recommended way to upgrade to 3.0.10 or did I have the correct approach and I just need to follow your latest tip about unmounting the guest additions?

Thanks again

Last tip would have fixed it for you.
Most people install the guest additions and forget about it. Meaning that is is still mounted and when VBox changes the additions of course the old file name is still associated with the mount. Since VBox can not find it, it complains. In the future when you get through installing the guest additions just unmount the CD and you will not have this problem.

I just tried to 'release' the .iso in the 'Virtual Media Manager' and it fails with the message 'The machine is not mutable (state is 2).' Now I'm unsure how to proceed. Thanks so much for your suggestions. Will my upgrade fail again?

Try it from the guest setting under CD/DVD in the VBox main program.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand where to find the 'guest settings' in 2.2.4. Sorry to require such specific advice, but where do I find this option?

Start the VBox program.
Look at the VM that you have and right click on it.
Then click on settings
Take the check mark out of mount cd/dvd drive.

Thanks so much. I hadn't seen the right-click-settings option because it was greyed out because the VM was only paused.

You've been incredibly helpful. Let me know if there's anyway I can make it up to you.
