Using Vbox 3.0.8 I am trying to install ubuntu-8.04.3-desktop-i386.iso on to Windows XP on a Optiplex GX270 (Pentium 4) with two Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers with two SATA drives. I am not using any IDE drives but the settings on the Hard Disk is: "IDE Primary Master: virtual.vdi (Normal, 2.00GB)"
I get to the "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer, Install Ubuntu, Check CD for defects..." screen but whenever I select "Install Ubuntu", there is no response.
Should I try a different Hard Disk setting? Should I select Slot SATA Port 0 to Port 29? How do I know which port number (0 to 29)?
Or is there any other suggestions?
Install ubuntu on Windows XP host Dell Optiplex GX270

Re: Install ubuntu on Windows XP host Dell Optiplex GX270
Giving the VM a hard drive of only 2 GB is a bold move. Even my slimmed down install uses near 4 GB, that's twice! your setting. Why didn't you leave it at the default 8 GB?
As for the no-response thing, have you checked the hash for the ISO file you got? You might need to redownload the ISO. I recommend using torrents, as that verifies the file too.

I agree with that. Why not accept the default settings. I installed ubuntu 9.10 yesterday on a Dell Vostro running Win 7 and VBox 3.0.10 using the default Linux settings and it went very smoothly.
