High CPU idle with SQL 2005 SP3 / 4

Someone did a good job of tracing this a while back to an issue with the way the RTC interrupt is used by some programs. It looks like the bug report has been ignored and maybe a new one should be opened. Does anyone know if there was ever any feedback from the developers or at least a reliable workaround to this.
Last time I uninstalled SQL 2005 SP3 to get things working normally but SP4 has come down with the automatic updates and it looks like I'm going to have to try and pull the update off and manually disable it as per SP3. I tried creating a dummy VM, but as per some other users this did nothing to help.
So does anyone have any feedback on this? or is it time to try another bug report?
