Hey All,

I currently have an HP DC5750 running an AMD 5400B X2 that is both 64 bit and virtualization capable. I've got 8GB's of RAM and a 1TB hard drive running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I've been running VMware for the last year or so on this machine. I decided to give virtualbox a try based on a recommendation from a co-worker.

So, I've downloaded and installed the latest build of virtualbox last night. That all went fine. Then I created a virtual machine and that went fine as well. However, when I inserted my Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit disc and started the virtual machine it gives me an error stating that I don't have a 64 bit processor and I'm trying to install a 64 bit OS. Well, I am trying to install a 64 bit OS, but I DO have a 64 bit processor that supports virtualization through AMD-V. So where is this going wrong? I did some searching around last night and couldn't really find another post that really pertained to this situation. I tried reinstallling virtualbox and even re-downloaded and reinstalled it. Didn't work.

Any idea what I can do to resolve this? Virtualization is half the reason I got this machine and I don't like the overhead of VMware...

Go to your bios and make sure that the hardware-V is turned on.

Edit: You may also need to contact HP about this. A few of the people that I have asked to do so came back with HP not allowing you to turn Hardware-v on as they did not want to support it. I don't know if that is the fact in your case but if you do not see a way to turn it on in bios you will need to ask them.

I've done that... both in the bios and in the VirtualBox VM( enabled VT-x/AMD-V)

I'm running a Dell Optiplex 745.

Do you have VMware on this PC and is it running or anything like that?
Other than that I don't know what to tell you other than contact Dell and ask them.
For some reason the bios is not telling VBox that you have the capability of hardware-v

Well, i double checked in the BIOS and there is no options for turning on or off the hardware v support, so that must be the issue. Looks like it's time to upgrade the mobo

I had the same problem. I have an Acer prebuilt machine that runs Windows Vista-64... but upon digging a bit further I found that the processor was enabled for windows to run 64 BUT the processor was not actually a 64 bit processor. So i installed the 32bit version of Ubuntu with no problems.

The processor can very well be 64 bit. But, without hardware-v, VB can't pass that to the VMs. Acer, just like Dell, has a tendency to disable hardware aided virtualization.

Must be the problem, 32 bit Ubuntu installed just fine...
