Since installing VirtualBox on my Windows XP host, I am unable to disable the host adapter. I get an error saying :It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account."

What if you disable the VB Bridged driver in the NIC properties and then try to disable the NIC?

I should have also mentioned that I am not running any quest machines. I disabled the VB adapter and re-booted my machine but still was unable to disable my wireless adapter. I uninstalled VirtualBox which to my amazement also removed my Windows XP wireless configuration completely. That was aggravating. I've had to download and re-install the drivers from Dell. Of course I have lost all of my network profiles. I'm weary.

Sounds like you had a different problem with your wireless than you first thought. VB would never do that, it would only remove it's driver hook to the interface, not remove the entire interface itself.
