Microphone does not work in guest

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop computer with Windows XP SP3 as host system.
I want to use a microphone in a Windows XP guest, but I can’t record anything. I am using a headset that works great on the host system (microphone & speaker). Sound works great with speaker or headset in the guest.

Here are some datas:
Windows XP SP3 on host and guest.
VirtualBox 3.0.8, Guest Additions are installed.
Host Driver for VirtualBox: Windows DirectSound with ICH AC97 controller.

I have searched a lot in this forum and Google, but couldn’t find any solution.

I just found out that you must switch on the “Line In” to get the microphone working. This must be a bug in VirtualBox!

Hi,

I have a KDE Debian Lenny host patched to the latest version on a Dell Vostro 1520 Laptop 4GB RAM with Windows XP SP2 guest running on VBox Ver. 3.1.4 r57640. The VM has 512MB RAM available and does play sounds when I have ALSA / AC97 combination of Audio devices configured in VB -> Settings -> Audio.

I am trying to run Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 in the XP VM but when testing the Logitec Stereo headphones and Microphone using XP Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Voice Tab -> Voice Recording -> Test Hardware button, all I get is hissing feedback type noise. Dragon also does not register any voice input when attempting to test the hardware. The Logitec Microphone works fine in the host OS as I regularly use it in Skype. I have also enabled both the Microphone and Line-in devices on the XP Master Volume controller.

I have searched your User Manual relevant to this version, your forums and using Yahoo as a general search on the web, and can find no solution.

I have changed the various combinations of sound hardware both in the host and in VB, using ALSA, OSS and Pulse Audio on VB and using the KDE Control Center -> Sound and Multimedia -> Sound System -> Hardware Tab -> ALSA, OSS and Threaded OSS all in both Full Duplex and non Full Duplex mode. I have also tried running the VM using AC97 and SoundBlaster mode with the above combinations and none of these combinations work!!! I have also tried using VB -> Settings -> System -> Motherboard -> Enable IO APIC disabled and enabled (installed with this disabled). I either get a hissing feedback type noise or, when using SoundBlaster mode I get nothing or the XP does not find the hardware.

Unfortunately for me, my Palm Desktop for Tungsten, Quickbooks accounting and Dragon NaturallySpeaking were the three main motivations for spending several man-weeks trying to get VB working. While Quickbooks accounting works fine, I have found that this environment has messed-up my Palm data on the Tungsten (many of my Contacts are now garbage) and the NaturallySpeaking does not work. As a result I am NOT HAPPY!!! Surely a Stereo microphone / Line-in on the PC should be a very easy, standard sort of device. I would understand if I was using a USB microphone, as that would be a little more difficult, but a normal stereo phone jack into the on-board sound device input...........???

Is there any solution to this problem with stereo microphones, please?

Alex
