I'm running winXP host, FreeBSD guest with VirtualBox 3.0.10. I have set up a bridged adapter attached to the PC's Ethernet interface for external traffic and a host only interface for connecting host traffic to the guest system. I run a FreeBSD DHCP server attached to the guest side of the host-only interface. When I set the host side IP address of the host-only interface statically, all works as expected. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP, I get offered leases by 2 servers which offer different IP addresses. If I'm lucky, the IP is picked up from the intended DHCP server. If not, I get an IP address from another DHCP server.

I have not enabled a DHCP server in VirtualBox and I have used VBoxManager to check that there isn't a DHCP server running on the host-only interface.

The DHCP server has an IP of 192.168.56.100, which isn't on my subnet, and a MAC address of 08:00:27:40:41:41 which is suspiciously close to but not the same as the mac addresses of the two VirtualBox interfaces I have enabled. The IP address I get is 192.168.56.101.

Any pointers to help locate and disable the spurious DHCP server would be gratefully received.

The host only network has a built-in DHCP service which uses that IP subnet.

You can disable this DHCP server from the VirtualBox console.
