I'm running 3.0.8 on Vista.

I'm trying to set up a VM with its own IP address, visible on the local network.
I have selected and enabled a Host-only adapter in the settings.
I have created a Vista network bridge between the Vbox host-only adapter and the local network.
When I create the network bridge, I lose all network connectivity.
If I leave the VM in its default NATed state, it works fine.

(One point: I'm not running DHCP on the local network; all machines have statically assigned IP addresses.
I'm wondering if this is related to the problem ?)

Can anyone suggest what I may have screwed up ?

The host only adapter will not make the vm visible on the network. It will only make it visible to the host OS.

To make the vm visible on the network you use the bridged network option. This allows the vm to access the network through the NIC in the host. You can disable the VBox host network interface on the host if you don't need to use it.
