IP settings I cannot understand.

The situation is the following: one single virtual machine with win xp on a xp host. I am behind a router (netgear d834g). My aim is to have different IPs for my virtual machine and my physical machine (meaning visiting knowmyip.com from my virtual machine and from my real xp installation on the physical machine must result in a different number). Is this doable? I am not as good as many on this board are, so if it is doable I'd like to know a feasible way to deal with this for a beginner.

Yes. In fact your vm must have a different IP address. All you need to do is select the bridged networking option. The vm will then look like another machine on your private network to the networking software.

No.
Your VMs will have (and as BillG says, must have if they are to run at the same time) different internal IPs (on your local network), but they will all share the same external 'knowmyip.com' IP, just the same as many physical PCs connected to your router would all share the same external IP.
UNLESS your ISP has assigned multiple external IPs and you can configure the router etc. to hook it all up...
