Windows 7 Host Windows XP Guest w/directX

Post by mddolloff »

Anyone know if I can run an XP guess on my windows 7 box have have directx work? I'm trying to play some old games that won't work in vista or 7 but will work in XP and am trying to avoid dual booting. The XP Mode that comes with windows 7 doesn't support it.

I've got to install virtual box anyway to get my ubuntu back up and running, but I figured I would check to see if directx would work and if it will i'll install xp first so I can suck some time playing games :-)

Hi,

I played Recoil on my XP Home SP3 host, Recoil needs DirectX 6 or higher. I works quit well, you will have to disable mouse pointer integration otherwise the mouse pointer does not work correctly.

One issue though is that the depending on the game resolution the screen will not scale up to fill up the entire monitor (1024*768 highest on recoil) shows up in a 1024*768 area on my 1600*1050 monitor.

Also my 'Need for Speed High Stakes' will install correctly but it does not like something with the virtual CD-ROM, it tries to do some thing for few minutes then asks to insert the CD again, but same game works on my dual boot XP Pro partition.

So the experience is ok you can give it a try, but if you need scaling up to fill the monitor and play all your old games then I think dual boot with XP and Win 7 is better.

Which games are you trying to play? Hope this helps.

Thanks,

DirectX is done through the Guest Additions, when installed in Safe Mode. You do have to select 3D in the installer and VM settings. New games will not run or very poorly due to the large overhead virtual machines have. You might want to check www.winehq.org for games that could run in VB, as VB uses the Wine libraries for 3D in Windows Guests.

I'm trying to play railroad tycoon 3. I got the virtual machine installed last night so I'll give it a go tonight to see if I can actually get the game to install correctly and run.
