Bridged Network

Post by stepheng »

Hi,

I have VirtualBox 3.0.10 running in Win Xp as Host and Windows 7 as Guest OS.
It seems that the installation did not go through, as I cannot access bridged network setting correctly, i.e. I cannot enter/choose a host network.
However a repair installation, de- and reinstall or manual install of network drivers does not help!
What now?
Can anybody point me to a solution?

Thanks

The ability to use Bridged depends on you having a router in the network. Do you have one?
Does NAT work if you choose that?

i've got 3.0.10 on xp sp3 and i can't use bridged networking either. i've removed it and reinstalled 3.0.8 which used to work, and now it has the same problem. so is vbox just unuseable after 3.0.10 install?

Perryg,

thanks for asking. NAT works fine to access internet etc. however I need bridged mode to acces specific ip' for example to use oracle database etc.

Any Ideas? My symptoms seem to be that no network driver is installed, whatever i try fails. in the windows hardware device manager nothing shows up...

@kabalah,
Uninstall VBox and then reboot. Install either version and reboot again. see if this works.

@stepheng,
You didn't mention if you had a router. Anyway if you simply need to access the guest in a bridged type mode you can setup a host-only adapter and then a second one to use NAT so the guest can get to the Internet.

VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter

Well I have not seen this since version 2.2.0, but there may be hope.
Uninstall VirtualBox, then download and run Revo uninstaller. This should clean the registry.
Then install version 3.0.8

The Host Only interface has nothing to do with bridged networking. It is a virtual network between the host and the vms.

What sort of NIC do you have in the host? On the host machine, look at the NIC properties. Do you see an entry called VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver? Is there a check mark in the box in front of it?

If it is not there or not checked, bridged networking won't work. This driver is required to allow a vm to use the physical NIC in the host.

So when you run it you do not see anything about VBox?

This is just getting weird. OK just go a different route. Since it does not find anything then it must be uninstalled properly.
Install the version 3.0.8 by right clicking the install and left clicking on run as admin.
Watch closely that the drivers get installed. Reboot when the install is complete and try again.

Perryg,

We have a router to access the internet. What I have to do is access our oracle server by its ip within a certain ip range (domain!) so that the oracle database is available for the program running on the guest os.
I can join the domain with dhcp setting via nat but then i can not access the oracle server, as i have to be in the specific ip range of the domain...
Also I cannot set up a host-only adapter as I always get an error, saying the host only adapter could not be found.

Perryg,

I just deinstalled and installed the old version 3.0.8. With this version it works fine!

Seems to be a problem with 3.0.10!

Thanks anyway
