Hi folks,

I want to install Windows 7 (32bit) from an iso image, wich I downloaded from MSDNAA. But the installation always aborts with an error message, that a cd/dvd driver could not be found. Any help?

PS: I'm running VirtualBox on openSUSE 11.1.

Please provide the steps to re-create this.
Does this happen as soon as you start the install process or after it has started?
Do you have a linux Live CD that you can try to see if it boots?
Also there have been some reports of failed downloads from MS due to their download manager causing different install issues.

It happens within the Windows 7 setup after clicking on "Start setup" and is an error message of the Windows 7 setup. I will try it out with a real Windows 7 CD and report, what happened

Hello All,

I have the same problems as mentioned above. After the button "start setup" he asks for cd/dvd player-drivers.

I tried the next things:
- Set IDE controller to ICH6 (i think this only affects the harddisk) -> same error.
- Enable additional controller -> SATA (AHCI) (Same as above, this probably only affects the harddisk) -> same error.
- Run DVD as mounted ISO disc -> same error.
- Burned ISO file to DVD and tried both "enable passthrough" selected and not selected -> same error.

My machine runs Ubuntu 9.10 with Virtualbox 3.0.10. I have downloaded a 64 bit, Dutch Windows 7 version from MSDN.

Perryg: The DVD boots correctly first he loads some stuff, than you have to select your language etc. Then you get the button 'start setup' and after that the setup asks for drivers.

Same problem here.
* MacOSX 10.6.1 Host
* VB 3.0.10
* German x86 Windows7 from MSDNAA

The really strange thing is, that I can install the 64Bit Version (from MSDNAA as well) without any problems.

You can try turning on passthrough on the CD/DVD and see if that helps. MACs should have this on anyway from what I have read.
I have installed several Windows 7 flavors and have not had a problem. I will see if I can get the MSDNAA version in a day or so and let you know.

Ok, I can't mount the ISO image in MacOSX ... seems like it is corrupt or something. I will download it again tomorrow.

When you get an error like that, it means that the ISO is corrupted.

I downloaded the ISO again today with the same result. I gave it a friend of mine to test it with VMWare - he had the same result.
I will now download the English version - maybe the Image on the MSDNAA Server is really corrupt ...

Another post here on the forums stated that the image may be corrupted because of the download manager you're forced to use. Even though the download manager checks for errors and says none was found, a manual check of the file hash revealed that it actually was corrupt. Try getting the image through some other means, like different browser (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari) or on a different OS (Linux, Mac).

I downloaded the image from MSDNAA again, with much more free space on harddrive and now the installer extracted the image and it works. I recognised the reason of this issue, when I tried to burn the first image and my burning program announced, that the image is corrupt. With the new image, I was able to install Windows 7 without any problems.

I had this installation problem myself. When i installing window 7 it also stopped, saying that the drivers is missing. My window 7 cd used for the installation was previously used to install windows on a single hard drive. It got it then installed with no problems. That same installation is still running, with no problems for more than a year now.
I ended up getting the virtual windows 7 running after i had made a ISO image of this same CD. The image was created using the standard Brasero disk burner package that came with my Ubuntu (10.10). I mounted the ISO as the virtual drive and perform the installation. The installation was flawless.

I got the same issue with a MSDN downloaded ISO.
I tried all the things said here and it did not solve the problem.
Them I looked up to permissions and just for the sake of testing I set the ISO file permissions to 777 (chmod 777 WIn7_msdn_SP1.iso) and it worked like a charm.
I also needed to set the permissions to the .vdi virtual disk file because by default (on ubuntu 10.10) they were not set automatically.
Hope I´ve helped
