I have been using MS VirtualPC to run a WinXP guest on a WinXP host for a while now. On upgrading the host to Win7, MS VirtualPC won't install, turns out the CPU won't support hardware virtualisation, so I thought I would use VirtualBox after hearing good things about it.
Loads up OK, accepts the MS VirtualPC vhd file and everything appears fine but then I discover that I cannot type and soon as I press any key the mouse won't work any further (PS/2 or USB keyboard and USB mouse).
The installed keyboard is "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard" (even if it is a USB keyboard) and it has a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. I have tried several different (standard) keyboards all with the same result. In the properties of the keyboard the device status is "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"
I did find one possible resolution to do with changing the registry to enable the device but then both keyboard and mouse failed to work.
Tried installing VirtualBox on a similar XP host with the same result.
Any ideas?

Re: Keyboard disabled
Use Device Manager to uninstall the keyboard device and reboot?
Desktop>My Computer>Right-click>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>Keyboards>(select)>Right-click>Uninstall
(Then Windows should recognise and configure the VB virtual keyboard hardware when it boots: Take a snapshot before uninstalling in case.)

Re: Keyboard disabled
Thanks for the response, tried it and it just re-installs the same (disabled) keyboard

Re: Keyboard disabled
I have now discovered that the "VM Additions PS/2 Port Mouse" (even though it is a USB mouse) is conflicting with the "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard". I can't find any way to resolve the conflict, they both appear to be using IRQ12

Re: Keyboard disabled
Are there any MS VirtualPC addons that need to be uninstalled?

Re: Keyboard disabled
I have to admit, I didn't understand your comment at first, but as it turns out you have hit the nail on the head. I didn't realise that the VPC additions were actually in the disk image.
I uninstalled the VPC Addition from within the Virtual PC and then after I figured out how to navigate to the device manager without a mouse, I uninstalled both the keyboard and mouse and everything is now OK
Thanks very much for your help (one of the best forum responses I have had in a long time)
