I'm wanting to use VirtualBox to set up a database testing environment. I have a guest OS (fedora) on which I have Oracle and MySQL databases running.
I want to be able to access these from the host OS so that I can simulate an environment where the database server is running on a different machine on the network.
I'm not experienced with the VirtualBox networking, so I'm not sure what the best approach is. Which of the different networking modes would be best, and are there any tips for getting this working?

If the connections are only to be made by the Host, so you only use Host <> Guest communications, use Host-Only. If other machines on your network need to access the databases or other resources on the VM, use Bridged. You do need a router or something else to separate the network from the internet.

If the guest is running a server application and the host needs access then you have two choices: "Host Only" and "Bridged". The latter gives the guest access to the hosts external network too, eg. the internet or your home/business network if you have one. If you don't want that then "Host Only" is the way to go.
