I have a Core 2 Duo T7250 2GHz with 2GB of ram XP SP3 machine, and need to run a virtual XP SP3 machine. Are there any settings in the virtualbox config that I should tweak to get the best performance based on my host machine's hardware?

What about on the processor tab, I have it set to 1 core. when i go to slide it to 2, it warns me that that will enable IO APIC (which that settings note says it might decrease performance)
also, what does enabling an additional controller as SATA do to benefit me? My virtual machine only has 1 hard drive to it.

You'll have to try different settings to see what runs best on your system, using immutable mode is perfect for such tests.

Not really, there still is alot of difference in performance between Host OS and hardware, there's no one best config that works for all.
