\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on guest windows xp

I have vbox 2.1 installed on ubuntu 9.04 and windows xp as guest. On this guest I have to access a program on my network that only accepts connection if i set a dns for it on system32\drivers\etc\hosts. I set this file but still can't use the program, I have access to the machine where the program is, but the dns-rule is required.
I believe that when the request on the network by the dns name goes out from the vbox, my ubuntu may try to request the ip address on the network to pass it to the virtualbox (or maybe i'm just a linux newbie that doesn't understand anything about networks, virtualization besides the bad English  )
I've already set the same dns name on my host machine (/etc/hosts).

Any ideas?

Try Bridge mode.
