I'm running Sun VirtualBox Version 3.0.8 r53138

Under settings>hard disks the IDE Controller type is PIIX4. There are two other options which I have tried.
I tried enabling additional controllers, SATA (AHCI), SCAI (Lsilogic), and SCSI (BusLogic)
I enabled ACPI and IO APIC

When it loads it goes to the windows loading screen with the scrolling blue bar, and then the BSOD appears with the info above. Also when I picked a profile to load it, I picked the one labeled "Virtual" which was the copy of the main profile for windows to start up with. I wanted to use the copy as to not mess up my current version of windows.

I'm also on Ubuntu 9.04


I did chkdsk /f in windows and a virus scan on every drive I have and everything has come back great. I even did a defrag just to cover all of my basis and none of it worked. I also disabled USB in virtualbox hoping that would do it and still a no go.


oh and I noticed in the tutorial it says that this will ruin any chance to boot into windows natively. Is this still true to this date or is possible to run it in virtualbox and boot natively? I don't want to get this up and running to find out I can't restart my computer and boot right into windows.

no ideas of what could possibly be causing this? I've spent 2 weeks now trying to figure it out and I'm completely stumped.

I can reproduce this behaviour exactly.
Host: Mandriva Linux 2010.0
Guest: Win XP
Virtualbox version 3.0.8_OSE r53138

I have been running WinXP as guest OS with raw disk access on my system for over a year now without problems (using VBox 2.2.4 and hardware profiles in WinXP for native boot vs. VirtualBox), and now after upgrading my Linux it won't work with VBox 3.0.8 any more. This is very frustrating. I have run the MergeIDE utility on my WinXP system booted natively. Any ideas?

I should add that when I uncheck (disable) IO APIC in VirtualBox, WinXP will not boot at all and freezes at the initial progress bar even before the WinXP splash screen appears. Enabling IO APIC gets the behaviour the OP described, but after the initial WinXP splash screen appears. Seems like an internal Windows security check? I cannot remember if there was an "IO APIC" option in VBox 2.2.4 but get the impression that this may have something to do with the problem.

jrohwer, the OSE does not have RAW Disk Access, only the PUEL one.

I'm not to sure about this. As mentioned I've been running this setup just fine with Vbox 2.2.4 (OSE) and raw disk access. Also http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Editions makes no mention of raw disk access for the PUEL edition.

Hmm, I was sure that it used to be a PUEL only feature. Guess they changed that.
