Windows 7 64bit guest on Linux host: Guest pauses frequently

I am experiencing choppy performance with my Windows 7 64-bit guest. Several times per minute it seems to stall for a second or two. During this time nothing appears to happen, but keypresses are buffered and appear in a flurry once the hiccup is done. I can still move the mouse, but nothing responds to it and the cursor doesn't change as it should. My processor is generally idle during these pauses, with utilization sometimes reading 0%. The pauses occur regardless of what I am doing -- even when I am just idling with an open PPT document (I can tell because the caret stops blinking).

Guest: Windows 7 Pro x64. Guest additions installed.
Virtualbox settings:
- Memory: 1536 MB (4GB on host)
- 1 processor
- VT-x/AMD-v: enabled
- Nested paging: disabled
- Video memory: 64 MB
- 3D acceleration: enabled
- ACPI enabled
- IO APIC enabled
- PAE/NX disabled

Host: Arch Linux

I've conjured up my best Google-fu but I still haven't found a single person reporting similar symptoms. I have no idea what is causing these pauses or where to look to find out. If you have any ideas about possible causes or relevant information I would really appreciate it.

** Update: I'm not sure if this is related, but I also somtimes (10 or 20% of boots, maybe?) end up in some terrible video mode with few colors and slow rasterized rendering. If I reboot the VM, it seems to fix itself.

I also found this thread describing similar issues specific to Virtualbox on Mac hardware, probably related to ACPI: http://vbox.innotek.de/ticket/2836. I am running on a Macbook Pro 3,1.

Just a follow up to the previous post...this is not in any way specific to a Mac OS host! This is happening on Windows and Linux hosts too (and apparently not just with Windows 7 guests either).

Because of this issue, I am basically unable to run Windows 7 under VirtualBox (well, it will work, but I have to iconify the VM for minutes at a time to let it "catch up" or whatever it is doing).

I sure hope that the good folks at Sun are working on this puppy...
