Hi,

I run a XP-Guest on my Win7, to get some older programms running which refuse to install under Win7. On the same PC i have Ubuntu (Jaunty). Is it somehow possible to get the same XP-Guest running under Ubuntu??

I have tryed to set up a new VM (in Ubuntu) and adding the virtual disk from the Windows partition. When i boot this VM i get a BlueScreen with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. But with the Win7-Host it works fine. Can anyone help me with this?

Was this XP guest created using "XP Mode" on Win7? If yes then the guest VHD is almost certainly a differencing type (like a snapshot) based on a root image held elsewhere on the NTFS partition - and VBox doesn't know how to find that base image. I have not played around enough with "XP Mode" yet to know if its possible to merge the images to create a flat VHD.

The only thing I can think of is to try to clone it with my CloneVDI tool. CloneVDI will refuse it if its a differencing type disk. If it starts working then you know its an ordinary VHD and can cancel the cloning process. CloneVDI does other validation checks on the VHD, so if the problem is something else then this may let you find out what it is.

Edit:  Oh, wait. Your mention of Win7 made me assume XP mode and a VHD. I see now that is probably not true. It would help somewhat if you provided this info at the start.

i could fix the problem by mounting the windows-partition to a different folder. Seems to be related to permissions....

Only Ultimate has XP mode with the VHD. Other versions don't have it.

Who can keep track of the various Windows packages? I do know that my new work PC is Win7 (Enterprise I think), and has the XP mode feature, though I think that may have been a downloaded add-on.

Well, according to http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_skus_compare.asp does only ultimate have XP Mode. But I read it wrong and it's available in Pro and above.
