Cannot attach USB device that needs a driver?

Post by coffeendonut »

Hi, we are trying to standardize on VirtualBox for testing and we need VIrtualBox to work with the Datalogic Memor Windows Mobile bar code scanner. We got other USB devices to work by disabling USB 2.0 in the BIOS, such as a USB thumb drive and a Symbol MC3000 Windows Mobile bar code scanner.

One thing I noticed is that the Datalogic Memor needs a USB driver installed first before the device is connected (unlike the USB thumb drive & Symbol MC3000). I wonder if I need to do some additional work to get this to work with VirtualBox?

What I tried (Windows XP guest on a WIndows XP host, VirtualBox version 3.0.8):

1. Installed the Memor's USB driver on the guest
2. With VirtualBox having focus and an empty USB filter set (to catch all devices) I turn on the Memor. After some time I see nothing happening in VirtualBox so I turn off the Memor, then I see the attached error box. From what I can tell it seems VirtualBox can't seem to attach the device (vs the guest o/s having issues with the Memor).

Does anyone know how I can get the Memor to work with VirtualBox? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have seen USB issues with vb 3.0.8. What I have done to get my USB to serial dongle working is to go to the device manager of the host, the device needs to properly install there first. Unplug the device and then start VB. Once VB is running plug in the device. Go to the USB filter on the guest and it should be listed there. Make shure that USB2.0 is not enabled. Make shure that there is only one USB filter, I think 3.0.8 has a hard time with more than one. Virtualbox 3.0.4 is much better at USB then 3.0.8 is for some reason. Hope this helps. :D
