MD5 IS NOT ENOUGH

Hi
I have downloaded and installed the "VirtualBox-3.0.8-53140-Win.exe" its Md5 hash is cd7a77f3e2652f9280d2ece9ea5d1f50. I have checked it , but.. in my experience I know MD5 is not enough because more than one time it has happened to me than an app checked Md5 OK but it didn’t behave. Wouldn’t be possible to have the SHA1 or stronger hashes of the downloads? As you can see in the attached image, describing Network settings (Red in Spanish) there are some items missing: Network name, MAC address, Generate button, and Cable connect Check box,. It is not surprising I am having a very hard time in getting my Win 7 host wifi adapter give connectivity to my XP guest.
Sincerely

Oh my, this is fun. I'm really laughing here, sorry. There have been some GUI changes recently in version 3.0.0 and newer and you're looking at it. Click on the clog (the little wheel next to "Attached To". There you will have the options you're looking for (MAC and cable connected).
However, these options shouldn't be needed for Bridged mode to use your wireless adapter. You can select it at the dropdown box below it. That's also a change, they renamed Host Interface to Bridged and added Host-Only. The change in name was to avoid confusion of the two attached methods.

MD5 may no longer be considered adequate for protecting against deliberate cryptographic attack, but it is certainly more than good enough to use as a checksum!
And in any case MD5 used in this way is only a (near) guarantee that the package hasn't been altered since the MD5 sum was calculated. It doesn't say anything about what is in the package! And the same would be true of any other hash code.

Hi everyone
Yes it is funny for me also, Sasquatch. I discovered it just by chance clicking on the gear icon. The problem is I am new in the VirtuaBox arena and the user manual is not very much illustrated. In fact there is no figure depicting Network Settings and the last figure is on page 93 (the manual is 267 pages long). To make things worse there is no step-by step guides, how-tos or examples, on the Net. No CBT or online training either.
So I did my googling trying to find a solution to my problems and stumble upon a page form a guy that have made a network settings screen capture that looks different than mine. Anyway. But still I remain fishy about the authenticity of the software I downloaded. Could anyone help me and send the sha1 and crc32 of the 3.0.8.53140 installable exe file? I found them in a Chinese page, but the crc32 was in a byte reverse way and I do not know for sure, whether it passed the crc32 check or not.
Sincerely
Prometeo

If you got it from
www.virtualbox.org, then you have the authentic version. The files are stored on
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox.
