I'm running VBox 3.0.6 on Windows 7 RC1 build 7100 (x64). I have several guest win2k systems with guest additions installed, and, as far as I can tell, everything is working correctly except the USB. I have added an empty filter in the machine setup, and after starting the guest VM and logging into it I plug in a DataTraveler flash drive. The Device tab on the VM now shows the DT with a tick against it, but it doesn't appear in the guest's windows explorer. I can unplug and re-plug the DT and observe that it vanishes ( <no devices available> ) and re-appears in the Device tab, but there is no change in explorer. During all this, the DT is not visible in the host system. After I shut down the VM I can unplug/re-plug the DT and it is then visible in the host explorer.
I've looked through many previous posts (and the FAQs) which is where I picked up the need to re-plug the device while the guest system had focus, but I didn't come across a solution to the above condition.
What am I doing/not-doing wrong?
Thanks, Roger

Re: USB device doesn't appear in explorer tree
You have to check if the Guest has a driver for it. Windows 2000 doesn't have as much USB drivers as Windows XP. This is certainly true if you enabled USB 2.0 and that device isn't installed properly in the Guest. Are you sure that the Guest is up to date and all hardware devices are installed properly in Device Manager?
I'm also moving this one to Windows Guests, it's a better place for it.

Solved: USB device doesn't appear in explorer tree
Thanks Sasquatch. The w2k guest is at SP4 and fully updated since then. The problem turned out to be a second usb controller being detected but no driver installed. When I removed (uninstalled) it, the hardware was re-scanned and the original (first) usb controller now detects the DT, and everything works.
Thanks again,
Roger
