Windows XP Guest refuses to mount shared drive

Post by arun79 »

Hi,
I? using Virtualbox PUEL on a Mandriva 200.1 Host with a Windows XP Home guest. I?e installed the following packages:
virtualbox-guest-additions-2.2.0-4mdv2009.1
dkms-virtualbox-2.2.0-4mdv2009.1
VirtualBox-3.0.8_53138_mdv2009.1-1

However, when I try to mount the shared drive on Windows, it never shows me the shared drive in Windows Explorer.. It does not even give the vboxsvr under My Network Places.

I fail to understand why this is so. everything else works including USB mounts, but not shared folders. Any help will be greatly appreciated, as I am really struggling with this.

One other question: Does the Windows XP guest cause any damage to NTFS Formatted USB Drives when they are mounted and written to? I am asking as I had heard in the past that Linux damages NTFS drives when we attempt a write to such drives.

Take a look at chapter 4.6. Folder sharing of the VBox users Guide. It covers how to use shared folders.
Also The share must be done in the guest settings with the gust shutdown (not suspended).

Guys, I feel like the idiot that said his network was not working and then found out that he hadn plugged in his network cable.

I went to the devices menu and found an option that said Ïnstall Guest Additions

Moment I did that, everything started working.

Thanks for your help everyone. This is what I really love the Free Software community for :)
