Virtual network between host and guest, no physical cards

I've been using vbox for some time, and I recently got a new laptop which I want to use away from home and therefore any networks. I'd like to establish a connection between the guest and host as if I had a crossover cable connected from the host to the guest machine if it were a real machine.

Another way of saying this might that I want to use the bridged network mode but to the host's 'internal' interface, or loopback interface maybe.

Basically I run a development web server on a debian virtual machine, and I'd like to be able to test my web pages from the windows 7 host. I tried to bridge to the ethernet card, but I think as it's not connected it won't even allow local routing (not sure if it ever did anyway!)

This must be a fairly common request, so perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I have tried all the different networking modes to no avail. Perhaps the 'internal' network has to be on a specific subnet or something?

"Internal networking" is for networking between guests, not host-guest. The "Host Only Adapter" network mode is what you should be trying. Bridging is not relevant: bridging is for making a link between a virtual NIC and a physical NIC, and obviously doesn't apply to your case. Attempting to use a bridge will probably only mess things up.

Got it working, just needed to alter the IP settings on the host only adapter - once I'd done that everything just worked, yay!
