Hi
I have no clue why but for some reason VB constantly stops. No matter what system I am using in the box, I tried WinXP, Win2k, Ubuntu, Debian, DSL and some more. Just after some minutes, the VB screen becomes grey and I can not reactivate the system. When I try to reactivate it, it instantly gets grey again, I can only kill the machine then. It also does not matter, what I programs am running in the box system, even in DSL without windowmanager the VB stops.
I tried several settings of the virtual machine RAM giving 500-1000MB and more it does not help.
What is the problem here? How can I get VB working?
My computer:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 4400+ 2.31 GHz
2GB RAM
Thanks for your help.

Re: Virtual Box stopping
More info please. Take your XP guest for example. How much memory are you giving it? How much disk space? Did you install the guest additions? What kind of network mode? Is USB enabled?

Re: Virtual Box stopping
Yes, like I wrote, I tried different Memory settings for the guest. I did it not only for the XP guest but also for Linux and 2k guests. First I thought, that maybe XP was too hungry of resources and so I tried a small Linux installation on a 1GB virtual machine. But here also it did hang up and nothing was possible to reactivate it.
The disk space is also various. My actual last installation of a XP guest has a 20GB virtual harddisk and has guest additions installed. Network is one adapter of PCnet Fast II (NAT). USB is activated with an USB 2.0 controller.
The Hostsystem is Windows XP only.
Do you need more information? Please ask.

Re: Virtual Box stopping
Ah yes, you did mention RAM in your first message. The only thing I would say about that is that RAM size is usually a power of two. I use 512MB in my XP guests, and that should be plenty for XP, which can run in at least half that. Do not try more than 1GB on your particular host, as you would be in danger of starving the host.
If changing the memory doesn't help then you could also try disabling USB support in the guest, and disable shared folders too. I'm not saying that these are long term solutions, this is about first finding out what the problem is.
There is a small possibility that this problem has nothing to do with VBox, that it's a heat (or overclocking?) related RAM problem on your host. You could try hunting around for a memory test app.

Re: Virtual Box stopping
Hm... Well I just did a test with 512MB RAM and USB and Network off... just after booting XP, the box starved.
If VBox would atleast give a hint what the problem is...

Re: Virtual Box stopping
I now did a Memorytest and it found no error. Still every guest system in VBox stops after some time...
Is there really nothing I can do?

Sorry, I don't recognize your symptoms and I've already suggested everything I could think of.
