[Workaround] Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
When I start a client with "network bridge" I only sporadically get an IP. The problem exists by using a hdd installation as well as with a cd image.
Can anybody help me to solve this problem?

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
What is the client? Is it the knoppix that is listed in the profile?
Can you also provide us with some more information, like do you have a router, version of VBox and other guest settings?
I have not tried using bridged on a live knoppix CD myself yet but will later today to see what happens.
I have however setup a knoppix VM and it does work with bridged. (see screenshot below)
Have you tried to set a static address in the installed version?

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Sorry. Yes. The Client is Knoppix 6.0.1 remastered. An I also tested with a hdd installation of the remasteres Knoppix.
I'm just trying to install and configure asterisk 1.6.1.6 on an Amilo Notebook with XP Home for later installation on an Asus Eee-Box with XP Home also. Therefor I'm using the VBox.
My VBox version is 3.0.6 r52128, my router is a FritzBox 7170 with actual software 29.04.70. I have a FritzBox Fon with sw 06.04.33 as well. That one is used espcially for testing with the phones.
Other guest settings is only the guest addition for the mouse.
I just tried it. It shows me the IP but I can't get a connection.

Do you mean this way?:Have you tried to set a static address in the installed version?
Code: Select all
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.178.3 netmask 255.255.255.0-

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Two things that cause me some concern. FritzBox have been showing up a lot here with people having problems getting bridged mode to work. I am not saying that this is the cause but it is something that you need to look at. Make sure that it is not filtering you out.
The other thing that I wonder about is the remastered part. Can you try to download and run the knoppix 6.01 live cd? It works fine in bridged mode as you can see from my previous post.
If I had to put my best guess forward though it would be the FritzBox where I would look.

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Thanks a lot for your answer.
I just started about 10 times with the downloaded Knoppix iso and it always worked fine. Then I tried again with the remastered iso and i got no ip at the second attempt. This is not really a proof. But in case, what can I do. I don't want to begin with the downloaded iso again.

How can I figure that out? I have no idea.Perryg wrote:FritzBox ... Make sure that it is not filtering you out.

I don't have a FritzBox myself I am just going by what I have read. You can search Google.com though and see what others have found out. Also there must be tech support at the company that make them and probably an on line support forum of some sort.
I can't tell you much more than you can find out though. I have knoppix working in bridged but I don't have a remastered copy. Sorry

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Actually I tried to figure out the main differences in the startup phase between the original image and my remastered one. Therefor I started also with the original image to look for the services shown with rcconf. And now it happend. I also got no ip with the original Knoppix iso image.
I'm rather sure that it happened to other guys as well. But not very often. So it may have been ignored due to not to be reproduceable. And I'm rather sure that it is a timing problem. And I think it should be a problem within the Knoppix startup phase.
Maybe a "sleep 2" or so sowhere in any /etc/rc1/- or /etc/rc2/-related file could help. But where and how?

Be so kind and give me your search string. I couldn't find any blog / thread discussing the same problem. My strings were actuallyPerryg wrote:You can search Google.com though and see what others have found out.

fritz box router problems in google and also see http://www.fritzbox.eu/en/index.php?l=select
You need to see how to configure/check it. I wish I could tell you but I have never used one. I just know there have been issues.
Surely the company you got it from has information on it.

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Hi,
I confirmn that I also see this effect with Ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10 as a guest (Host is XP).
The router is also a Fritzbox 7170.
It only applies to Linux guests, never saw it with Windows.

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
I think I'm rather close to the reasons for that problem. First reason seems to be that the vm tries to reach the FritzBox via the lan network card instead of the working wlan connection. But there is no cable connected. So I deactivated the card and I got a connection. This workaround is okay for me for this part of the error.
Now the FritzBox shows the IP 192.168.178.3 and I reach the Internet. But the client gets the same hostname as the host. The FritzBox shows it with a trailing (2). And I can't remove the entry for the guest (IP 192.168.178.3) in the FritzBox without restarting it. I can't connect with released host folders by hostname, only by IP.
How can I get a different hostname for the client?

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Look at /etc/hostname and see if the name is the same. If it is edit this file and change it. reboot or run the statement below:
I think this works in Knoppix but not sure. If not then you need to reboot
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/networking restart-

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Good news first: "/etc/init.d/networking restart" works.
Now what I did and what happened:
The "/etc/hostname" already contained a string: "Microknoppix"
I changed it to "Asterisk" Afterwards I could not open a bash window any longer. So I restarted. I'm working with a remastered image. So I had to change the hostname again.
First I opened a bash window and tested the "/etc/init.d/networking restart". It worked. Now I changed the "/etc/hostname" again and did the networking restart immediately. After that I looked into the FritzBox. Big surprise: The hostname for my ip wasn't the same as yesterday. Today it is "PC-192-168-178-3".
But the main problem is the same as yesterday: I can't connect with released host folders by hostname, only by IP.

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
That's because you need to add the hostname and ip address to the hosts file (/etc/hosts)

Re: Linux Client w/Bridge gets IP sporadically
Thank you. You were right. I inserted the line with "192.168.178.11" for the XP VBox-host within the hosts. And I put a line with "order hosts bind" as first line into the /etc/host.conf file. The /etc/resolv.conf already contained the nameserver line.
What I do not understand is why the only host that could not be found by hostname was the XP VBox-host that is on the same machine.
Can you/anybody explain that to me?
