importing VHD

Post by GregoryCW »

Hello all,

I have used VirtualBox on XP, Vista and now on Windows 7 RC. Most of my work has been running Linux on Windows.

I downloaded from Microsoft a trial Vista VHD. It does load under VirtualPC but won't map the networkcard. So, I used vboxmanage to convert it to vdi -- 13G, took a little time.

I then created a Vista VM and attached the converted vdi. It doesn't work:

FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted.

I have tried some combinations of settings: VT-x on and off, different IDE controller types. No go.

I realize getting this to work was a bit of a stretch. But if someone knows how, I'd like to hear about it!

Thanks.

Known issue. The images that you download from MS as set to use the VPC and anything else will force a verification which will not pass. According to MS they report that validation key as lost or stolen so they will work in VPC but once they see a hardware change the go astray. Plus if it is a VHD file it will work by default in VBox if you remove the MS VPC additions first, but here again it will see a hardware change and if it is a trial download from MS you are out of luck.

Thanks for the reply and the info. I have tried several variations without success. The one that I haven't tried is using qemu, convert the vhd file to a bin.

More info: the VHD being released do not work with Windows 7 (RTM) with the new Windows Virual PC program.

MS on the other hand, is not releasing ISO copies, at least not for the trial copies.
