Hi
I have problem getting guest get thru' internet.
In my work env., only MAC address is limited to AD user. so my host machine gets 1 IP from DHCP, there is no way VB adaptor can get another IP.
so my VBOX adaptor is with following setting:
Ethernet adapter VirtualBox Host-Only Network: (i have BRIDGED NETWORKING checked)

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 08-00-27-00-7C-C9
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.24.5.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.24.2.4
172.24.2.5

On my Guest LINUX 2.6 box :
network setting is set to Host only network.

[root@vm1 ~]# ifconfig -a|more
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:63:82:EF
inet addr:192.168.56.10 Bcast:192.168.56.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

[root@vm1 ~]# more /etc/resolv.conf
search local.com
nameserver 192.168.56.1
nameserver 192.168.56.1

[root@vm1 ~]# more /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/if*eth0
# Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE]
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=none
HWADDR=08:00:27:63:82:EF
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet
USERCTL=no
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes
DHCP_HOSTNAME=192.168.56.1
IPADDR=192.168.56.10
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
GATEWAY=192.168.56.1

I can ping from host to guest and guest to host.
but i can not ping anything on internet from guest e.g. ping http://www.yahoo.com
i can not ping any DNS setup on HOST either e.g. ping 172.24.2.4

can somebody tell me how i can accomplice this ?
thanks
Ken

In such case only NAT will work for your Guests.

thanks for tip
i set it up to NAT and DHCP on guest. now i can ping yahoo and host PC.
i want to make sure GUEST gets a same IP every time, so i want to change DHCP to static and still have it working.
i see 10.0.2.15 retrieved from DHCP. does that mean i can setup
static IP: 10.0.2.XX
gateway : 192.168.1.56 (host adaptor ip on VBOX adaptor)
dns : 192.168.1.56 (host adaptor ip on VBOX adaptor)

Thanks

Why do you want your VM to have a static IP? With NAT, you really should not use any other configuration method except DHCP. If you want to have your Host to be able to access the Guest unrestricted, you need two interfaces for the VM, one with NAT, the other with Host-Only.

thanks for reponse.
here is what i am planning/assign to do.
i need to setup 2 VMs to regression 2 different release of Oracle, run web application on 3rd VM and use HOST browser for regressioning web application pages, navigation etc.
Our work PC are secured by MAC address, so basically, my HOST has 1 IP from AD server.
So i need communicate among VMs as well as host-to-vm and vm-to-host.
my planning was setup VMs and the networking with Virtual adaptor with following IP,
192.168.56.10
192.168.56.20
192.168.56.30

Now i was able to accomplice this with VMWare, i heard good things about VBOX especially the speed, so trying to see if i can migrate to VBOXs from VMWare.
I will appreciate if you can suggest me something.
Thanks

That idea can be done with Host-Only. See the manual, chapter 6, for more information about networking with VB.

i read upon the chap 6, looks like i have to define 2 NICs in VM, one with HOST only and 2nd with Bridged. it started working.
but what i noticed is, it tapped the IP from our work DHCP server, so much of MAC security :) , i am able to ping internet from guest. do you think there is anyway not to tap extra IP from DHCP and just work off the IP assigned to HOST machine ?

Thanks

For just basic internet access on the Guest, use NAT. That uses whatever interface has internet access.
