After installing Gues additions and starting up your machine, have you tried clicking on Machine, Auto-resize Guest Display and see if that helps?

You may have clicked Devices > Install Guest Additions, but that doesn't install them unattended. You have to manually install them. I've made a howto for Linux Guests, Windows 2000 and above are supported as Windows Guests and a few other systems like Solaris. You can read in the Manual for which systems are supported by the GA.
