Virtual Machin crashes all the time :(

Post by mb0156ba »

Hello together,

I have some big big problem with one of my virtual machines on virtual box! Before I used virtual box (actual 3.0.6) I used VMWare Server 1.0.x on a Windows Host and never had the same problem. But let me explain:

Host
OS: Crunchbang #! Linux 9.04 (x64)
VBox: Virtual Box 3.0.6 r52128

problematic client
OS: Debian 5.x (x86)
It is an Torrentflux client with one small virtual disk for the system and another 250 GB PATA harddisk integrated in RAW format for the data.

Now let us talk about the problem:
Especially this VM crashes all the time. Sometimes it turns of after a while of work, on other times it is still dsiplayed as "running" in virtual box, but there is not feedback, no ping, no webaccess, nothing and i have to send the poweroff signal to this machine. Perhaps I should tell you: It is always running headless!

First I thought there might be a problem that I mounted the 250 GB data disk on the client (torrentflux, readwrite) AND on the host (readonly), but it is still the same problem after I unmounted it.

So now I think there is some problem with the IO-processing for the RAW format disk? Unfortunately I do not know exactly WHEN the machine crashes, but I think it happens when there is a lot of access to the data disk (e.g. i copy some contents from the client to the host and have >5 torrents running). But there is no ratification.

So what should I do now? I do not want to switch back to VMWare. Perhaps anybody of you has some information for me that can help?

Thanks a lot!

Regards
Alex

P.S. Here the information about the crashing client VM...perhaps it may help...

Re: Virtual Machin crashes all the time :(

At first the virtual machine was running with only one core and with only 256 MB RAM.

Then I thought it might be some performance problem, so I gave another core to the virtual machine and some additional RAM. But situation is the same, with 1 and with 2 cores.

Btw.: Host hardware is an AMD X2 3800 EE with 2 GB RAM and if the virtual machine is crashed most times one of the two host cores has same hight load. But when everything is running well cpu load is about 25% (downclocked to 1 GHz by Cool'n'Quiet) and RAM usage is about 60%...

//edit: At this moment virtual machine crashed again :( I only started one additional torrent...Virtual box GUI still says "running" but I do not have any connection (no ping, no webserver, no ssh). Cpu load is now ~10% RAM usage still 60%...
