Storing somewhere other than /home

Post by cat2005 »

Good Evening All,

I "sort of" raised this issue in another thread (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21316) but am putting a new spin on it.

My host OS stores the virtual guest OS, etc in the user's /home (I have to "unhide" it to view it).

My limited understanding could cloud the following assumptions and conclusions, so correct me if I am wrong:

Since the guest OS is stored in a user's /home, that means only that user can access it when starting virtualbox. Is that correct? To get around this, I could store the guest OS in a shared drive (2nd internal IDE harddrive) to which all users can read / write. As a result, I could have anyone in the "virtualbox group" access this guest OS. Otherwise, I would have to recreate this guest OS in each /home/insert-user-name-here.

Am I correct or not?

What I want to do is create 1 guest OS that can be shared by multiple host user accounts.

Is this possible and if yes, then what should I do to start?

Thank you.

Current Setup:
- Ubuntu 9.04 on 1st internal IDE harddrive
- Storage space on 2nd internal IDE harddrive (all users have read / write access)
- p4, 2.4 ghz cpu
- 1 gb ram (around 300 - 400 bus)
- virtualbox installed, but no guest OS created yet
